Partnering for Health
A model for leveraging global businesses to support and strengthen public health systems across Africa.
Mozambique is located between South Africa and Tanzania on the east coast of Southern Africa. There are over 28 million people living in Mozambique.
At Independence in 1975, Mozambique inherited a health system that was severely biased towards urban services and extremely poor in rural and isolated areas. Despite improving health outcome indicators, Mozambicans’ health remains among the poorest in the world.
Difficult terrain and seasonal route variations make delivering medicines challenging in Mozambique. With The Coca-Cola Company’s proven track record in delivering products in this challenging country, The Global Fund invited Project Last Mile to support the Central de Medicamentos e Artigos Médicos and local partners to design and pilot supply chain solutions.
We are applying best practices in route-to-market and logistics by following a similar process to that which The Coca-Cola Company would use to map distribution for a Coca-Cola product. This blueprint will help to improve delivery and increase availability of medicines in for people in hard-to-reach areas.

This paper, published in IJHPM, uses longitudinal qualitative data from Mozambique, South Africa, and eSwatini to show how trust in multi-sector partnerships evolves over time. The resulting framework can be used by others seeking to embark on or strengthen partnerships, consistent with PLM’s aim of inspiring broader private sector engagement.
